Fairy Tale
- Definition: A tale for small children, sometimes involving fairies, goblins, etc..
Legend
- Definition: A tale handed down from earlier times; the tale is thought to be true but can not be proven.
Tall Tale
- Definition: An exaggerated tale telling unbelievable events.
Fable
- Definition: A tale that teaches a moral/lesson.
Myth
- Definition: Tales that explain origins. The original author is unknown.
Fantasy
- Definition: A fiction story that contains elements not found in the real world; magic, talking animals, and dragons.
Sci-Fi
- Definition: A fiction story having major scientific features. Ex. time travel, space travel, and aliens.
Mystery
- Definition: A fiction story that involves a puzzling criminal offence that must be solved; can fit under many genres.
Realistic
- Definition: True to life fiction story; characters and settings are realistic; events could happen in real life.
Historical
- Definition: A fiction story that takes place in a true historical setting time and/or place.
Non-Fiction (not fake)
- Definition: Based on real facts or events.

Newspaper/Magazine
- Definition: A text containing current news events, editorials written by various authors. A paperback periodical containing a collection of articles, stories, various visuals, and other features.
Subject Books
- Definition: Books that focus on informing the reader about a particular subject.
Reference Books
- Definition: Books containing useful facts or specially organized authoritative information; not meant to be read from beginning to end but used as a reference.
Biography
- Definition: A writer tells the life story of another person.
Autobiography
- Definition: A writer tells his or her own life story.
Play/Drama
- Definition: A story written in dialouge form and usually meant for performance before an audience.
Poetry
- Definition: Text written in meter/verse/rhythm that uses figurative language to appeal to the senses.
